It’s not easy to find Format in Microsoft Word 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019 and 365, as all items from the drop-down menu of Format tab in Word 2003/XP(2002)/2000 are not gathered together no longer in Word 2007/2010/2013, but disorganized into different groups on the Ribbon.

In this view, the headings are arranged hierarchically – if there’s a plus sign on the left side of a heading, it means that it has another text level below it, while a minus sign is followed by continuous text only.

Initially, manual formatting may seem to be easier and quicker, but for longer texts it’s more efficient to use Word styles instead of repeatedly formatting sections of text separately. Word displays the Modify Style dialog box. You should see a down-arrow appear at the right side of the style name. This is particularly noticeable when editing complex documents, such as final papers or manuscripts. Hover the mouse pointer over a style name in the Styles window.
Preset as well as custom styles make it easier to work on a text document.
